CLE Engineering, Inc. has been retained by the Town of Nantucket to perform field investigations, sediment sampling and analysis, design, permitting and bid and construction phase services for the maintenance dredging of approximately 8,300 CY of sandy sediments from the existing 6-foot deep channel located in Polpis Harbor. Dredge sediments are proposed to be hydraulically dredged and pumped along eroded shoreline areas located within the vicinity of the harbor and south of Quaise Point. Dredge sediments will restore coastal resiliency to the shoreline and barrier beach the provides storm and flood protection to several private properties.
CLE’s responsibilities for this project include oversight and coordination of hydrographic survey and volume calculations, topographic beach surveys and nourishment design, eelgrass survey/mapping, dredge and disposal alternatives analysis and cost estimating, development of design plans, coordination and implementation of sediment sampling and testing program, environmental permitting and construction oversight and management. The dredging and nourishment sites are located within/adjacent to existing eelgrass beds; therefore, dredging and nourishment activities have been designed to avoid/minimize impacts to this highly protected resource area. Dredging is anticipated to be conducted by the Barnstable County Dredge in Fall 2015.
